Life After Summer… Something new under the sun (with apologies to Ecclesiastes)

Friday, September 4th, 2015

As we shift gears to enter the time of the afterlife (life after summer that is) I would like to share a few words with our membership and friends.

First, welcome back. I hope your summer had at least some wholesome and positive activity built into it. Homecoming Sunday is upon us and I want to invite you and yours to gather for this energizing service. Topsfield Fair is a month away. Let’s repeat and exceed last year’s achievement in cooperation and community creation and in raising funds for our mission programs. Let us  fill those shifts quickly.

Secondly, I want to focus briefly on the ACE (adult Christian education) program for the next few months.
Bible Study: The regular Tuesday morning Bible Study at10:00 am will commence on Tuesday, September 15. There were requests for an evening study opportunity as well and we will try to determine the best time to schedule that soon.
ARC (A reading circle): Our popular book studies will continue this year under the leadership of the Board of Deacons. More information to follow soon.

Speakers: Following our hosting of Raheel Razza earlier this year, we will have three guest preachers and speakers. I have tried to align our existing ministry activities with the themes of speakers. The following events have been set and you can mark those on your calendar:
September 20: Rev. Edward Matuvhunye, former national president of the UCC in Zimbabwe. He will speak on the situation in Southern Africa and with the international refugee crisis as broader context. Our current RIM family will also be present and it is good opportunity for the congregation to meet them.
October 18: Rev.Charla Kouadio, from Chicopee, will speak on the theme of mass incarceration in the US. Our Board of Mission is involved in ministering in the field through Tom Warren’s prison chaplaincy through RIM and also the support we provide for Straight Ahead Ministries.
November 1: Dr. Jim Antal, Massachusetts Conference Minister, will preach and be with us in an event following the service. More detail to come.
Early in December: Our home grown expert in end of life issues, Larry Atkins, will inform and enlighten us on a relevant theme during the Advent time.

I look forward to travel this part of our journey with you as we strive to be and become God’s people.

Shalom,
Martin
