“Guns and the Realm of God” Post Event Review

On Saturday January 7th, with the prediction of a foot of snow, over 85 people including church members, local clergy, and community members from various towns across the state, participated in this community outreach event hosted by the Board of Deacons and the local social action committee, H.U.G.S. (Hands Up for Gun Safety).

Rev. Matthew Crebbin, Senior Minister of the Congregational Church of Newtown, CT presented a captivating keynote address discussing the need for commonsense national gun laws. Rev. Crebbin, who supported the families and community after the horrors of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting, stated that since the beginning of 2017, there have already been 6 mass shootings. He noted that the states with tougher gun laws have lower incidents of fatalities due to gun violence.

Rev. Crebbin’s address was followed by a panel discussion led by former Salem Police Chief and current State Rep. Paul Tucker and Topsfield resident and co-convenor of the Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, Angus McQuilken. Both Tucker and McQuilken shared their wealth of knowledge on gun violence prevention. There was an active question and answer forum following their presentations.

Be on the lookout for future programs being offered by H.U.G.S.
